Significant Historical Patents of the  United States (Jim Bieberich )

--------------------------------------------------------

The first official patent ever issued # X000001,(a historical precedent) issued by the US Patent Office, signed by President George Washington.

Date: July 31, 1790 Issued to Samuel Hopkins for a process of making Pot Ash.

On July 31, 1790, inventor Samuel Hopkins was awarded the first US patent for a new method of producing potash and pearl ash. Potash, later called potassium carbonate, was used as a fertilizer, as a detergent to clean fibers in textile production, and as an ingredient in soap. Pearl ash was a more refined material used to make glass, to make salt for gunpowder, and as a leavening agent in baking (baking soda and baking powder were not invented until the 1940s).

Both potash and pearl ash were produced by burning wood, mixing the ash with water, and then boiling the liquid in large iron kettles, usually at the edges of newly cleared fields.
